I love the Windows 7 taskbar with it's jumplists and other functionaility but one thing that really irks me is the messenger icon that hangs around even when i've got no active conversations. If you remember prior to Windows 7, if you minimized messenger the toolbar icon / button wasn't there however with Windows 7, it remains...

Over the past few days I’ve seen a flurry of activity over something which is being referred to as “God Mode”. It would appear that somebody found a small applet that gives an administrator a single window with links to perform a whole array of tasks but what is more bizarre is how some people are treating this like it’s some form of secret or discovered hidden functionality. What prompted me to write this post was a CNET News post about the feature and I wanted to put a little tech-thought into the mix.

A tweet (or rather a community feed) got my attention a day or so ago which was the replacing of the boot logo in Windows XP. While this was an older trick, it did lead me to do a quick search as to doing the same thing in Windows 7 which in turn let me to a really interesting article...

A major challenge in migrating existing users to Windows 7 is user profile data and desktop setup scripts. It’s highly unlikely that anything the user has done to their existing machine to personalize it will be compatible with the new Windows 7 desktop. The result? All upgraded employees have to re-personalize their desktop – not a quick task, especially as the process to make such personalization changes may require changing options and settings in new menu locations.

Unless you’ve been living on a desert island in the mid-Pacific for the past few months (actually, that sounds pretty good!), you’ve probably heard something about a new Microsoft OS called Windows 7. By all accounts, this OS looks set to be the next logical upgrade from XP (with many companies skipping Vista for reasons I don’t need to go into right now!). So not only will companies be looking to upgrade their existing physical PCs to this wonderful new OS, but the availability of Win7 will inevitably bring about a re-assessment of the corporate desktop estate. That re-assessment will of course consider the prospect of lowering management costs by moving from physical machines to a virtual desktop environment; Win7 seems much more ‘VDI friendly’ than any of its predecessors.

What I have to say here is not new and something that many other people are thinking but I just wanted to put out a verbal view and get people’s thoughts and feedback. I’m open for a healthy discussion on this and also to change my mind however here is my thought.

At 1PM ET today Microsoft made available the Windows 7 RTM to both TechNet and MSDN subscribers. I would imagine that these sites are currently getting extreamly heavy traffic but Microsoft did state in a blog post that they had done substantial work to ensure they can deal with the load.

I blogged earlier about the Windows 7 RTM media now being available on both TechNet and MSDN however the speed being experienced for downloading is rather slow - there is another way.

Ive been playing with Windows 7 since the early betas and along with being especially impressed with the operating system have found myself pondering why certain things have been implemented and what impact they may have going forward. I do want to also point out however that I personally didnt have much of an issue with Vista and have used the operating system successfully since release I was more disappointed with how quickly the technical community jumped on the bandwagon of slating the release especially when there were no grounds other than recital.

I dual boot my MacBook pro between OS X and Windows and way back when the Windows 7 BETA came out I set to use that. Because at that time a few things weren't quite right (like the built-in FTP client) I struggled to use it as my everyday OS but when the RC was released a few weeks back I couldn't wait to install it. The only issue I came up against during install was the fact that the Apple BootCamp drivers didn't install out of the box...
