Comments over VMware’s decision to not ship Virtual Profiles (the technology VMware gained through their acquisition of RTO software) with VMware View 4.5 continues to rock around the Internet. There are people who bought RTO Virtual Profiles before the acquisition by VMware, who are now upset about the dropping of support (this can be seen in Bridget Botelho’s article on SearchVirtualDesktop.com – Virtual Profiles customers endure VMware acquisition of RTO Software – where RTO customers have now switched to a User Virtualization solution from AppSense) . There are also people who thought that the inclusion of Virtual Profiles in View would solve their user virtualization problems and who now will have to wait longer to try it out, some of which actually purchased VMware View on the premise that RTO Virtual Profile technology would then be included in VMware View 4.5.

VMware recently acquired from RTO Software (Virtual Profiles), while good at reducing user logon times, does not provide enterprise scalable Personalization and Policy Management. Instead, organizations need to consider a user virtualization solution to enable mass adoption of desktop virtualization technologies.
The 451 Group have just published a case study confirming exactly this, through the use of a real life VMware View customer that was unable to adopt VDI with only logon time / profile management technology from RTO Virtual Profiles (which will at some point be incorporated into VMware View)

The title of this article may be a bit misleading as when I refer to security I’m actually talking about things like forensics. Computer forensics have been very prevalent in IT for many years in some cases even providing the backbone for dismissal cases and law suits but with desktop virtualization now in the mix, has this been considered and has the landscape changed?

Now that the dust is settling and the tweets are dying down about the VMware acquisition of RTO I thought that I would put a little of my perspective on how the deal affects the bigger organizations such as RES Software and AppSense. As someone who has firsthand experience of dealing with competition in the personalization space, I will try and give an honest idea of how this move affects the mentioned organizations and what’s next for them.

Congratulations to all at RTO software – Vmware has just announced that they have bought three of their products for incorporation into View. RTO goes forward with Tscale, their performance management product and they will presumably continue to innovate with more products in the future.

On February 22nd 2010, VMware acquired certain assets of RTO Software, namely their Virtual Profiles technology as well PinPoint and Discover products. The organization goes on to mention that the R and D efforts of RTO will now be merged into those of VMware.
A PDF document on the VMware website gives answers to various questions such as those around support, the future of the product and how the software will be used.

What do you need to do before you deploy a desktop virtualizaiton solution?
Having had the opportunity to architect a few VDI, Desktop Virtualization, Alternative Desktop, or whatever you choose to call it, solutions over the last few years I thought I would put together a list of the top things that need to be done in order to be successful with a VDI rollout. Note, I am assuming that business justification and need has already been established so no comments about whether or not anyone actually needs or should deploy a desktop virtualization solution.

VDI what is the definition? Citrix? VMware? Since customers are doing POC's and buying basically everything is VDI now. XenApp yep VDI.. XenDesktop yep VDI... View VDI... Microsoft RDS....Leostream.... VDI.... ETC!!! Marketing at it's best. My second choice for the title would have been "VDI: an IT stimulus package"

How the economy is driving IT decisions in the hardest hit industries. Here is one example, of many I’m sure. I would love to hear some success stories of companies that were/are truly on the ragged edge of being no longer... but leveraged technology and made it through a truly tough time.

A conversation about why VMware, XenServer, and the rest of the space simply emulate a BIOS when the advantages the opensource community is starting to produce at the BIOS level are clear. OpenFirmware & EFI was a step in the right direction, but did not go far enough.

With the current state of our server operating systems virtualization is critical. No question. VDI on the other hand is a genius marketing product that originated from VMware to gain market share from Citrix and Microsoft, and you know what? They did quite successfully in an industry Citrix was deeply entrenched in VMware made rapid inroads to Citrix's client base by bundling the product. Citrix had to dump a ton of cash into developing a VDI solution just to handle the buzz! Kudos to VMware on this.

What I have to say here is not new and something that many other people are thinking but I just wanted to put out a verbal view and get people’s thoughts and feedback. I’m open for a healthy discussion on this and also to change my mind however here is my thought.

Virtualization is a big and obvious play in enterprise environments. Its promise of shrinking the data center footprint, reducing costs, and enhancing the workflow of IT and the business make it a perfect fit for environments of size. But small businesses neednt necessarily be left out in the cold. These smaller environments where no- or low-cost tools are standard and administrators must take broad responsibility rather than specialization stand to gain as well. Yet with so much information in the market todaymuch of which is focused on the needs of the large environmentsmall businesses and environments have a hard time justifying a move to virtualization.
